Be of Good Service

Welcome to the Neighborhood News

“The more we serve our fellowmen in appropriate ways, the more substance there is to our souls. What a loss to the individual and to humanity if the vine does not grow, the tree does not bear fruit, the soul does not expand through service!”

(President Spencer W. Kimball, ‘President Kimball Speaks Out on Service to Others,’ New Era, March 1981)

We know how to offer service, right? We have been taught by example: our parents have shown us, good friends, relatives or neighbors. Marie Ricks from ‘House of Order,’ tells us in her article “Service Sundays”: “I am occasionally asked how to teach family members how to serve. I believe that like most other worthwhile goals in life, service needs to be regularly and pro-actively taught to family members.” So guess what, she put together a plan to be implemented monthly.

We do believe in service. It is what we, as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints do all the time. Contributor Jenny at Mormon Women, brings up a point in her article “We Believe: Service.” She says: “Christ is our ultimate exemplar in service. In every parable, every action, every sermon, He taught us about service through words and action.” If we truly believe in Christ and His teachings, shouldn’t we do as He taught?

At The Idea Door, contributor Sharma put together a list of activities to do as a service project. Her article, aptly named “148 Ideas for LDS Service Projects for Youth,” is good for inspiring service, and you can use it in different areas of the community, not just the youth.
