Accepting Changes

Welcome to the Neighborhood News!

‘Change’ is defined as:
“To cause to be different – to transform - to give and receive reciprocally - to exchange for or replace with another, usually of the same kind or category - to go from one phase to another - to put on other clothing - A transformation or transition from one state, condition, or phase to another.” (From thefreedictionary.com)

As people, we sometimes find ourselves afraid of change. We don’t want it, don’t welcome it, we avoid it at all costs. However, at other times, we are ready for a change, or at least we want to make a change in our surroundings in particular, or our lives in general. I guess we can accept it as long as it's on our own terms.

Russ Beck, a friend and contributor, is a licensed professional counselor with a Master's degree from the University of Wyoming, who has been involved in the mental health field and does family counseling, finds time to keep a blog going, “On the Couch… by Russ Beck”. In this particular article “Musings on Change”, he mentions a personal experience early in his life that taught him that we need to ‘transition’ to be able to accept change.

Talk about changes! Melissa Young, a contributor to Segullah.com, muses about the changes in her life that she can clearly see in her hands. We can all see the passage of time, the changes that time brings and we can’t escape. She says: “I have an image in my memory of my mother’s hands, her fingers curved with tiny newborn fingers gripping onto them. She is sitting on the worn hospital couch next to my oldest son, their heads bent together, cradling our new baby girl. “What do you think she will do with these hands?” she whispers to him. “Will she make cookies or bread? Draw pictures?”

And then there are the changes that we can make to our surroundings. They can be good and welcomed, or not. This article "Greening our lifestyle" from the website FindingBonggamom,  focuses on small and easy changes we can make to reduce our carbon footprint. What is that, you say? Well, let me give you a definition: “The total amount of greenhouse gases produced to directly and indirectly support human activities, usually expressed in equivalent tons of carbon dioxide (CO2).” (From timeforchange.org)
